PHOTOGRAPH OF THE WEEK - 20 June 2008
Wellington Airport was closed due to fog on the morning of Monday 16 June 2008. John's photograph shows the scene over central Wellington taken from Victoria University at 11:27. By that time the fog had almost cleared but not quite. There were two main bands aligning north-south, one to the east of the Miramar peninsula and one to the west of Mount Victoria. This fog originated over the sea south of Wellington and was being advected across the city by a southerly breeze.
Great site you have.
This photo I took today (16 June 2008) from Toko, Central Taranaki. The cloud ring around Mt Taranaki usually means rain and sure enough a few hours later down it came.
'I took this photo when I was up in a hot air balloon over Hamilton on the 11 June 2008. I used a Cannon 350D on auto for this shot. Its looking toward Mt Te Aroha and you can even make out the big TV mast on the top of it. Cheers Jamie.'
My name is Robin Behr and I love the photos on MetVUW.
Attached is a picture that my wife Margaret took from the Carrick Range Bannockburn, Central Otago at approx 16:30 in the afternoon facing Clyde in a NE direction.
The Camera used is a Nikon CoolPix set for Landscape.
This shot was breathtaking, silhouetted in the rainbow is my truck.'
This is a fine photo of a glory Robin.
'I took this photo on Sunday the 8 June 2008 at about 16:15, we were on our way back from Te Anau to Queenstown Between Garston and Fairlight, heading north, the cloud formations were remarkable. Especially after the dump of snow the south had on Saturday night of the 7 June. I took this with a Cannon power shot A630 camera. I hope you find this of interest. Regards Laral Leete.'
'Thank you for maintaining a both beautiful and informative website. The photos submitted are, as always, fantastic.
This morning my wife poked me in the ribs and said, 'look, wave clouds'. Thing is you don't see them too often down here in Waiuku.
So, I grabbed my camera and took a shot, which I've attached to this e-mail.
The photo is taken around midday on 14 June 2008 and I'm facing South' wrote Frits.
'I took this photo of the snow looking south at the northern end of Williams St in Kaiapoi, on the 7 June 2008.
I measured up to 1cm on concrete surfaces and 2.5cm on grass and other surfaces.
We are at sea level here it is not our biggest fall but certainly an interesting start to winter.
The temperature here at midday dropped from 17°C to 12°C in less than 20 minutes with a cold Southerly change then further plummeted within an hour to 3°C by 13:00 with heavy rain and sleet.
It then dropped to 0°C by 15:00 with snow falling and no wind at all.
Taken on my Nikon 3700 camera, the snow was falling heavy at this point with flakes about the size of a 10 cent coin and settling very quickly for about 20 minutes.
'Hi James, Fiji Last day of holidays and the weather is getting interesting.
A large towering cumulonimbus grew over a 4 hour period. Looking South East towards Nadi and Bounty Island, the distinct circulation in the lower cloud never did produce more than a hint of a funnel' wrote Andrew.
'We were staying with friends at their bach in Kaiteriteri Beach, Golden Bay, when I woke up to see this beautiful sunrise.
Hunting the bach, I managed to find the camera before the sunrise faded.
We had enjoyed 3 days of still, clear weather, today was true to the saying,"Red sky in morning..." as it was raining by evening.
Taken about 07:00, Sunday 1 June 2008, with a Canon 3.2 mega pixels, IXUS 30.
John wrote 'Location - Standing on top of Mt Benger - North Canterbury
Time - 17:30,
Date - Saturday 14 June 2008,
North West winds,
Facing towards the west with my camera as sun set,
Camera - Canon Powershot A530 5.0 Megapixels Digital Auto Exposure.'
