PHOTOGRAPH OF THE WEEK - 25 October 2007

Sorry for the delay in changing the Photograph of the Week I am currently in Chile. Chile is a beautiful country of huge climatic contrasts. I have included a couple of photographs which highlight some of these contrasts.

Cheryl Retallick

'Just thought you might like this interesting cloud photo. I took it with a Fujifilm Finepix S5700 digital camera. This was taken in Levin, looking toward the northwest from our yard, on 11 October 2007. Thanks in advance, and I really enjoy looking at the photos of the week. Some are amazing' wrote Cheryl.

Many thanks Cheryl, your photograph is of mammatus clouds, my favourite cloud form - always guaranteed to be shown on the MetVUW site.

Jerry Zinn

Jerry wrote 'Was just introduced to your website by my son-in-law - absolutely fabulous and so informative.

Saw pics that have been sent to you, so here are two pics of mine, both taken in Takapuna, Auckland. The red sky (shown below) was taken from my balcony about 08:20 on 20 June 2007, with Canon D300.

The other was on Takapuna beach (above) on 25 September 2007 at 15:20 with a Canon Power Shot S5IS.

Mark Botting

'Took this great photo at the top of Panekiri Bluff in July this year tramping around Lake Waikaremoana with my kids. It was very still in this "goblin" forest while a gale was screaming over the top. A lot of cloud would blow into the forest creating these eerie scenes. The kids were way ahead in the distance - they were fitter than us and sadly didn't care much about the scenery (it was very damp and cold - about 3 degrees - and just wanted to get out.!!)' wrote Mark.

Joerg Klenert

Joerg wrote 'I took the this picture last week while travelling from Europe to Japan. It's the aeroplane's shadow on a dense layer of cloud below, with the sun precisely opposite.'

Simon Hill

'I stumbled across your website a few days ago while looking for forecasts. I spent some time looking at the photos you have collected which have been sent in from other browsers. There are some amazing photos in there!!

Funnily enough, only a couple of days later I saw this at Waihi Beach. it is looking eastwards out to sea. The photo was unfortunately taken with a camera phone, 21 October 2007 at approximately 12:40 with very strong westerly winds. I am definitely no meteorologist, but have never seen anything like this before' wrote Simon.

Cumulus forming over Cerro San Cristobal with the magnificent city of Santiago de Chile in the foreground. Santiago has a typical Mediterranean climate with most of its approx 350 mms of rain falling in the winter. However the interannual variability is large. Annual rainfall can be as little as 100 mms or as much as 700 mms in years of strong El Niño weather patterns.

The meteorological station at Lago Claxa (23°17'19"S 68°11'01"W, 2309 metres above mean sea level), in the Atacama Desert, Northern Chile, with some of Chile's 150 active volcanoes in the background, including the 5,592 metre (18,346 ft) Volcan Lascár which last erupted on 18 April 2006. Most Chilean volcanic peaks are between 5000-6000 metres above sea level and more than 10% of the world's active volcanoes are in Chile. The Atacama Desert is one of the driest areas in the world, with some parts not having seen rain for more than ten years.
